Abstract
Trench excavation for sewers causes ground movement which can damage adjacent pipelines. This is of special importance in urban areas where lots of pipelines exist. However, only few data are available on the magnitude of the ground movements. An overview is given on the existing data concerning observed soil displacements due to trench excavations. A numerical model to calculate displacements of the ground in different distances from the trench and in different depths is presented. Using the calibrated numerical model, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the influence of trench depth, trench width and soil type. Basing on the results, recommendations are given concerning the determination of the displacement values depending on the most relevant parameters for practice design.
