Abstract

For the calculation of lean turbulent premixed flames, the recently developed algebraic flame surface wrinkling (AFSW) model was extended to lean hydrogen/methane flames for varied pressure up to 9 bar. The comparison with experimental Bunsen flame data from Orleans confirms that molecular transport processes are showing a significant role, as the Lewis number is explicitly included in the model for the mean reaction rate. A new approach is proposed to determine an effective Lewis number for the hydrogen/methane fuel mixture, which is based on the fuel mass diffusivities. The basic idea behind this approach is related to the leading edge concept, promoted by Lipatnikov and Chomiak, according to which the propagation for highly turbulent flames essentially depends on the local conditions of the positively curved leading edges directing towards unburned premixed mixture.
