Abstract

Abrasive water suspension jet (AWSJ) cutting is a 2-phase-system based on a suspension with approximately 2.5 Vol.-% abrasive. Unlike AWIJ, which is a 3-phase-system, the jet does not include air. This gives the advantage of higher efficiency at the same pump capacity. The major disadvantage of this method is that the suspension cannot be switched off using currently available valve technology. In this paper, a new valve technology for the handling of an AWSJ is described. The challenge is to interrupt the suspension stream while avoiding abrasive particles on the valve surfaces. To accomplish this, the sealing surfaces are flushed with pure water.
