Abstract
Structural fire design of composite columns partially encased in concrete may be carried out by using tabulated data given in DIN 4102-4 as well as Eurocode 4-1-2. The design tables enable users to classify structural members into fire resistance classes. The tables contain minimum values of the cross-sectional dimensions, of the ratio of web to flange thickness and of the axis distance of the reinforcements in dependence of load level and fire resistance class. Because of the minimum ratio of web to flange thickness, most of the hot rolled steel profiles do not fit the range of validity. Furthermore, the tabulated data lead to uneconomic and even unsafe design solutions of the composite column in most of the design cases. Therefore new tabulated data for partially encased composite columns are suggested. This tabulated data was developed based on extensive parametric studies with an advanced calculation model based on the finite-element method. With the new design table the fire design of partially encased composite columns can be carried out for nearly all hot-rolled steel profiles and welded sections in normal multi-storey buildings. The classification using this table leads to safe and economic fire design of the structural member.
