Abstract
The Medical-Balancer is a hoisting device for dogs developed by the Institute of Materials Science (IW) of the Leibniz University Hannover in collaboration with the Small Animal Clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. Special features include a balancer- and load relieving function. The crane function with several belt systems adaptable to the patient's needs serves for the gentle lifting and lowering of the dogs. The balancer- and load relieving functions are designed for the physiotherapy of dogs. The balancer- function serves to fully compensate the weight of the dog during therapy in order to enable orthopaedic patients to train movements without having to load the respective limb. The load relieving function provides the possibility of adjusting a discharging weight for a relieved exercise on the treadmill. Therefore the physiotherapy by means of the Medical-Balancer can be optimally tuned to the individual needs of the different patients, and the training intensity can be increased step by step. Besides the benefit of the Medical-Balancer for the patient, the device provides an easy handling for the physiotherapist. In contrast to other crane systems, pad-ents can be lifted and lowered without the need to push buttons. The lifting of heavy patients can be carried out without force, leaving the physiotherapist only to give the impulse for the lifting, whereas the weight-lifting of the dog is carried out by the device. This report introduces the Medical-Balancer as a device for the support of the dog physiotherapist. Furthermore, the functions and first experiences during the development and the clinical use of the device are described.
