Abstract

A study to realize a negative dispersive non-absorbing medium and to investigate its optical properties is presented. A calcium atomic beam is pumped to obtain a strongly driven two level system. An infrared injection locked diode laser system is developed which is frequency doubled to obtain the transition wavelength of 423 nm. A second similar laser is used to investigate the absorption and dispersion of the system in the vicinity of the atomic resonance. The pump laser frequency is stabilized to the calcium transition whereas the probe laser system is phase locked to the pump laser at a tunable offset frequency.
