Abstract

Geo-spatial data are acquired for different purposes and thus based on different data models. This leads to different data sets. In order to allow for an integrated use of data from different sources, methods for an integrated representation of those data are proposed. Such a representation is called Multiple Representation Data Base (MRDB) and consists of the different data sets on the one hand, and links between the individual objects in the different data sets. Such an explicit linking allows for a direct access of corresponding objects; possibly, also the differences (transitions) between the data sets are known and can be exploited. Links can be established using semantic and geometric matching techniques or known rules to derive one data set from another. There are several areas that benefit from such a multiple representation scheme. The first is the integrated analysis of different data sets, leading to a mutual exchange of information. The second is the possibility to propagate updates from one data set to the linked ones. Also, in the context of multi-scale-representation, it can help to efficiently visualize data on small display devices.
