Abstract

Based on polymer/glass composite materials developed for catalytic distillation purposes we improved these materials for flow-through applications in organic synthesis [1]. During the last years we developed micro- and mini-reactors with a monolithic structure consisting of a glass carrier material with irregular shaped channels combined with a monolithic polymer phase [2,3]. This concept was used to attach functional groups or active sites on the polymer. With these reactors resin supported synthesis with anchored reactants as well as catalytic reactions were investigated. Meanwhile we enlarged the applicability of our composite reactors, including attachment of catalysts by ionic bonding and heating with microwaves [4,5]. Our presentation is an overview with respect to engineering aspects of the reactor design and operation and the versatile application in organic synthesis. Preparation of the reactors by polymerization with different monomers, attachment of functional groups, design of reactors for different purposes, flow-through operation performance, kinetic investigations and mass transfer experiments are given.
