Abstract

This work is focused on increasing the local wear resistance of PM components by producing an adapted hard material gradient in highly stressed areas. The production principles are investigated by axial pressing and sintering of cylindrical specimens. The gradients are produced through a graded dispersion of tungsten carbide in a ductile matrix powder. In subsequent experiments, wear resistant graded forging dies are fabricated consisting of alloyed steel as a ductile base material and a gradient of fused tungsten carbide (FTC). In order to achieve a full compaction and sufficient mechanical properties, the graded die is manufactured by hot isostatic pressing. Using the near-net-shape approach, a solid mold element is applied during pressing to form the die contour geometry in the graded powder bulk. Thereby, the gradient structure can be produced parallel to the die contour and an excessive material removal through final machining is avoided.
