Abstract
Mistakes can initiate important learning processes; indeed, it is crucial how students handle their mistakes. In this study, on the individual level, we investigated differences between learners in dealing with mistakes: positive learning orientation towards mistakes (POM) and fearful avoidance of mistakes (FAM). On the class level differences between learning contexts were captured via students' perception of their teachers' dealing with mistakes (mistake-friendliness, MF). Results of a confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the independence of the dimensions POM, FAM, and MF. In multilevel analyses conducted with a sample of 421 primary school students, POM and FAM were predictive of academic self-efficacy, effort investment, and joy of learning - even after controlling for learning and performance goals - whereas, unexpectedly, MF did not predict the criterion variables.
