Abstract
The radiative recombination of two‐dimensional electrons is studied in GaAs–GaAlAs heterojunctions with holes localised on acceptors in strong magnetic fields. The optical measurements are emphasized as a probe of the properties of the two‐dimensional electron layer. In the case of two subbands occupied, spatial changes in the self‐consistent potential due to a population in the second subband are demonstrated. In the regime of the fractional quantum Hall effect, downward cusps occur in the mean energy of the luminescence at fractional filling factors and values for the quasiparticle energy gaps are derived.
