Abstract
The global and regional aspects of economic development are discussed, and the stages in the internationalisation and globalisation of economic areas are shown. It is suggested that the regional level will increase in importance under post-Fordism. A programme for regional research based on regulation theory is presented. It is shown that globalisation and regionalisation are intrinsically linked and many new parameters for regional development are currently resulting from the globalization of economic activities.
