Abstract

Referring to results of the LEO survey from 2018 the article attempts to shed light on how adults with 'low literacy' on the one hand tend to feel unrestricted in their participation in many domains of everyday life on the one hand, whilst on the other hand they are highly affected by exclusion from other areas on the other hand. To answer this question, results of a qualitative study will be presented focusing on literacy practices, habitus and the milieus of adult learners in literacy courses. They indicate that milieus offer different opportunities for 'life with low literacy'. A lack of participation is especially anticipated if the milieu-specific practices of the own or an aspired milieu are challenged. Referring to the concept of relational poverty, it is concluded that 'low literacy' particularly then becomes a problem (for the individuals), when it does not 'match' with the milieu.
