Abstract
This paper presents numerical investigations on life-cycle engineering in relation to reinforced concrete structures in fire. In this context, the life-cycle considerations refer to the weakening of concrete structures due to spalling. These effects are well known, but are not taken into account in design process of concrete structures in most cases. For this purpose, a new approach has been developed which allows the consideration of concrete spalling in fire situation. Depending on the moisture content of concrete, water vapour pressure in cross-sections has been calculated and the points of time when spalling occurs have been determined. Based on this, a numerical model of a representative building exposed to a natural fire has been developed. In this model, the effects of spalling in relation to fire resistances have been determined.
