Abstract

Withdrawing gas from gas storage caverns in rock salt causes a decrease in temperature within the cavity. This temperature drop leads to a decrease in the tangential stresses at the cavern wall which may result in macroscopic fracturing in the rock salt mass. The internal gas pressure is acting within the fracture which favors propagation, especially during refilling. Now, it has to be investigated if those fractures are finite at a certain distance. This paper deals with the investigation of thermally-induced and gas-pressure driven fracturing in rock salt. Therefore, a new laboratory device and results from numerical modeling are presented. The overall aim is to validate theoretical approaches which have been developed for considering fracturing processes during rock-mechanical dimensioning of gas storage caverns.
