Abstract

Many civil engineering materials occur in granular or particulate from. These materials include sand, gravel, silt or similar geo materials. Special applications are foundations under water that have to be designed in constructions like offshore building or harbours where an interaction between the construction and the foundations occurs with the water. One of the problems when estimating the load carrying capacity of a foundation is the formation of scour that results from the local flow at the construction. Mechanisms describing this transport phenomenon can be modelled by a direct simulation that is based on a discrete model of a particulate flow. The necessary model equations will be provided in this work. Furthermore the resulting numerical scheme is applied to the formation of scour around a pylon.
