Abstract
The training of design engineers is facing complex challenges. On one hand it has to regard a change in the field of action as well as the requirements of an adapted training concept. In addition, it should be attractive to students and employers. Only a small proportion sees itself as design engineers in the sense of a product developer in the area of construction and seeks respective positions in the manufacturing industry. To address this problem, the project "Konstrukteur 2020" which is funded by acatech - National Academy of Science and Engineering, evaluates the current status of university education and compares those results with the requirements of modern design engineers. As part of this article first insights of the project are presented on the basis of a survey within different Departments of Mechanical Engineering.
