Abstract

Among the German population, the city of Hanover and its inhabitants are known for their pure pronunciation of standard German. However, while linguists agree that Hanoverians do not speak pure standard German, that their pronunciation is even dialectal, the language myth seems to be firmly anchored in the mind of non-linguists. Two essential questions arise from this: firstly, why is the language myth so persistent, whereas linguists unanimously contradict it—even independently of each other—, and secondly, on what empirical data do linguists base their statement? The present article takes its place in the research of sociolinguistic studies and attempts to show the discrepancy between assertion and knowledge with regard to the purity of the Hanoverians' pronunciation and to empirically investigate the myth of the purest standard German. For this purpose, language data of 32 Hanoverians were recorded and the occurrences of standard or non-standard language features were quantitatively analyzed.
