Abstract

The application of stainless steel sheet metal is well established for different industrial areas e.g. power stations, architecture, exhaust systems, crash parts for vehicles, kitchen sinks and household machine housings. The perfect surface of stainless steel sheets becomes more and more attractive especially for housings of refrigerators or cookers. To avoid the visibility of finger prints on this satin stainless steel surface, new clear-coatings for stainless steel panels are utilized. Here an organic coating consisting of nano composites and characterized by a high hardness in combination with a good scratch resistance is been used. During forming operations of these pre-coated ferritic stainless steel sheets damages on the brittle clear coat can be seen. The paper will deal with experimental results which describe the forming behaviour of the sheet metal and characterize the forming-induced damage of the clear coat. In the context of the experimental tests, the ply adhesion of the nano coating on specimens is assessed by using an adapted processing and analysis method. The gained results of these substantial investigations are leading to a better understanding of the material behaviour of nano coated stainless steel sheets in deep drawing operations. Final aim of this project is the description of the ply adhesion for different true strains during sheet forming.
