Abstract
Based on previous work a test rig for investigations into the tribological characteristics of radial lip seals has been further optimized implementing a sapphire hollow shaft and a new setup for LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) measurements. High-contrast visualization of the sealing contact is achieved utilizing a total internal reflection imaging technique. Quantitative lubricant film thickness measurements are performed applying an in-situ calibration approach. At the same time as the optical film thickness measurements are conducted, the seal friction torque is determined. Results of speed step experiments carried out within the low-speed range of 0...100 rpm are presented for new and run-in seals.
