Abstract

At the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) micro-dimples are produced by means of fly-cutting. The work presented clarifies the impact of the tool rake angle on burr and chip formation when machining ductile steel. The development of a special quick-stop device allows the production of chip roots using flycutting kinematics. SEM and metallographic micrographs give detailed information about the three-dimensional chip formation and characteristic variables, such as chip compression ratio and shear angle. These investigations provide an adequate basis for the understanding of the material removal mechanisms and consequently for the tool and process design.
