Abstract

Breakdown investigations at XLPE model cables were worked out at voltages of different shapes. The breakdown voltages are quite different. The highest breakdown voltage was measured at DC voltage with negative polarity and the lowest at AC voltage with 250 Hz. The DC strength is mostly influenced by the water content. While dry model cables have a very high breakdown strength up to 400 kV/mm, the value of wet model cables is approximately 80% of the former. If the model cables contain water trees, the DC breakdown strength is reduced further. The most sensitive voltage form in order to discover water trees is clearly the 0.1-Hz-AC-Voltage.
