Abstract

This status report deals with the processes and effects of infiltration, as they occur in particular during wave overflow on the inner slope of a dike. Given the predicted sea-level rise, this scenario is crucial for dike safety, provided that the existing dikes are not strengthened. In this context, recent studies since the publication of the "Recommendations for the Execution of Coastal Protection Works" (EAK, 2002) are discussed. As a first basis for evaluation, the condition assessment of dikes using evaluation criteria is covered. In addition, the structure of the dike top soil is examined, whereby the water storage capacity and the shrinkage behaviour leading to crack formation are referred to. The cracks result in a high permeability of the dike cover of about 1-104 m/s. In the event of water infiltration, the dike cover softens, reducing shear strength and thus dike safety. High water levels in the dike core also have an unfavourable impact on stability, the effects and scale are illustrated by means of exemplary test results. Recommendations on calculation methods and measures to increase the dike safety are given as well as an outlook in respect of the coming climate change.
