Abstract

Typical logistics problems of multi-variant series productions are characterized by long and fluctuating lead times, high inventories, networked material flow structures, and complex requirements on the order sequence formation at machines. In order to achieve a competitive market position, identifying and quantifying the logistics potentials for improving the delivery performance is consequently a primary challenge. The technologically demanding process of a steel mill is influenced by different factors, e.g. changing sequencing rules, high set up times, and specific customer wishes. The challenge is to identify the most relevant parameters for due date reliability and the derivation of effective counter-measures in order to improve due date reliability. The problems in quantifying the potentials for improving the delivery performance to the customers consist in identifying the appropriate way to parameterize them and in their mutual (reciprocal) influence on each other. Therefore a combination of identification methods for one-dimensional and multi-dimensional correlations between delivery performance and potential improvement measures have been enhanced and applied. The gained results demonstrate the applicability of the described approaches for solving these problems in similar case studies and research issues.
