Abstract

Graphene offers advantageous properties like a high strength and electric conductivity. For wear protection, it can be used as dry lubricant in rolling bearing contacts, as well as an additive dispersed in oil or grease to improve the respective characteristics under certain tribological conditions. For this investigations, graphene platelets were functionalized on the raceways of angular contact ball bearings as dry lubricant, which forms a thin film. In addition, bearings were lubricated with grease containing graphene platelets. In this case, a small ratio of graphene was dispersed with grease. The experimental studies were carried out under oscillating movements. The respective load in the tribological contact was 1.5 GPa, the test frequency 5 Hz, the pivoting angle 48°. It could be shown that graphene as dry lubricant or as grease additive features beneficial properties under the given test conditions.
