Abstract
An idea that has been actively discussed in the most recent debate on the ethics of peace, the concept of ≫Just Policing≪, also understood as justified police action, is critically and comprehensively examined in this article, based on the fifth proposition from the ≫Theological Declaration of Barmen≪ (1934). In this process, the key principle underpinning this concept, the miles protector, is openly recognised, as the state functionally determines its task to be the preservation of justice and peace by means of threatening and implementing violence. Through its implementation in the context of justice, and in terms of the goal of peace, the violence envisioned in Barmen V is not to be understood as ≫violence≪, but as the level of ≫force≪ that is appropriate in and valid for ≫law enforcement≪. At the same time, the focus will turn to the church's role with regard to the question of legitimate use of violence, including prayer as an exercise of trust and obedience to the Word of God.
