Abstract

The joint modelling of precipitation, runoff, inundation, and damage is presented in an application at the 3500 km2 Bode river basin. Three types of design rainfall are used: single events from regional frequency analyses, continuous precipitation downscaled from climate models, and stochastic continuous rainfall. Precipitation is transformed into design flows and inundation areas by means of rainfall-runoff models and hydraulic modelling. Then, the risk is estimated from derived damage probability distributions. The results show that single design-events are suitable only for smaller sub-basins, and that promising results may be achieved by using synthetic rainfall data irrespective of the basin size. The latter method of derived flood and risk analyses will become increasingly important, especially for effectivity studies of complex flood protection measures and for analyses of the consequences of climate and landflood risk.
