Abstract

Precision forging is defined as a flashless forging operation which generates high quality parts by means of surface quality and accuracy to dimension. So far precision forging processes have been designed for connecting rods, gears and hand tools. The diversification of this group of parts with the design of a precision forging process for crankshafts not only expands the number of possible products but also requires new technical solutions for the changed problems of the process. The most obvious differences between currently produced precision forged parts and crankshafts are the bigger mass of the crankshaft, the extremely asymmetric distribution of the mass and the absence of concave form elements suited for the positioning of convex punches as implemented with connecting rods or gears. To solve these problems a new forging process chain with three forming processes was developed. Practical testing of the processes showed the feasibility of forging crankshafts with flashless precision forging technology.
