Abstract

Organometallic complexes like cobalticinium cations act as structuredirecting agents in the synthesis of microporous solids with open frameworks composed of silica. During the hydrothermal synthesis they become occluded by the crystallizing framework. In contrast to the post-synthetic methods that have been used before to prepare organometallic/silica composites, this direct synthesis gives homogeneous, stoichiometric and highly crystalline compounds. In the nanostructured materials, the occluded complexes are spatially organized, and often they are aligned. Also, they are stabilized and protected by the surrounding framework. Organometallic/silica composites prepared by direct synthesis in which the complex acts as structure-directing agent thus offer the possibility to combine the advantages of solid-state and molecular materials.
