Abstract

Improved friction behaviour of sealing systems is a design objective with increased importance. Surface structuring in the sealing contact is a possibility to modify tribological behaviour without changing the overall sealing system. A deterministic surface texture on the seal surface is one type of surface structuring. The influence of surface textures on viscous and adhesion friction is studied qualitatively with simple modelling approaches. Pneumatic actuators are used as experimental sample applications. Friction forces of elastomeric piston and rod seals are measured. The seals were textured during moulding or by laser. The friction reduction potential of surface textured seals is verified.
