Abstract

The feasibility of a compressor concept with variable-area inlet annulus, variable-width diffuser is investigated based on experimental measurements at a hot-gas test bench and an engine test bench. The experiments are carried out on two compressors stages with different flow ranges. The experimental results show the potential of flow range enhancement through variable cross-section. Both compressors achieve 50% reduction in surge mass flow and a 30-40% increase in operating range as measured by mass flow between stall and choke limits. The results of the engine tests verify the capability of the concept concerning low-end torque improvement of the engine. By means of the variation of compressor cross-section, the larger of the two compressors achieves an equal low-end torque as the smaller reference compressor.
