Abstract

Species knowledge is essential to understand the value of biodiversity. However, acquiring this knowledge is difficult. Based on experiential realism a learner-orientated, interactive species identification tool for trees and marine clams was developed called “ID-Logics”. By using the model of educational reconstruction, students’ conceptions were collected in an interview study (n=6). Possible educational obstacles were identified and components of the identification tool were developed. These components were evaluated in
teaching experiments (n=28). On the one hand, the results showed that students were able to describe basic characters and traits. On the other hand, educational obstacles occurred with certain characters and students needed assistance. Interventions such as abstract graphics or short videos can support them in the process of identification. Moreover, an intelligent programmatic logic was implemented to combine these components in the identification tool ID-Logics. Based on our results, guidelines to develop further interactive identification
tools are formulated.
