Abstract
The experience of belonging uncertainty can result when individuals perceive a lack of fit to their social environment. It is particularly likely among underrepresented groups such as female students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This chapter acquaints readers with the concept of belonging uncertainty and discusses sources for belonging uncertainty based on an assessment of congruence in skills, interests, goals, and values based on agency and communion. This chapter introduces the BICAP (belonging uncertainty as incongruency of communion and agency perceptions) process model that explains the development of belonging uncertainty and how individuals may react to it. Finally, the chapter outlines interventions that may help to mitigate female students' experiences of belonging uncertainty in STEM contexts.
