Abstract
A novel optical sensor for absolute displacement measurements is presented. A technical surface acts as external reflector for an anti-reflection coated laser diode. Evaluation of the resulting mode spacing determines the laser resonator length, i.e. the distance to the technical surface. Mode-locking by synchronous pumping of the laser diode allows fast precise displacement measurements. Former theoretical calculations predict a spatial resolution of 1 μm at a measurement rate of 200 kHz due to the resonant feedback. Possible applications are contactless in-situ measurements in the industrial material processing.
