Abstract

Building projects often have missed targets because of their multidimensional complexity. Increasingly, digitization measures for the construction industry are being discussed. Particularly in the implementation of digital methods such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), an important approach is taken to reduce and control the complexity of project execution. Based on literature studies, guideline-based interviews and online surveys, the presented study considers dimensions of complexity as well as evaluating digital solution approaches through expert assessments. The multidimensional complexity can be clustered in communication, project management, project culture and technology. Furthermore, the study comes to a positive cost-benefit assessment for different applications and shows the potentials of different digital approaches.
