Abstract
Nutritional factors are of central importance for dental health. The uptake of necessary nutrients via food not only provides the systemic prerequisites for the formation and maintenance of teeth and the periodontal apparatus but also provides substrates for the microbial formation of the biofilm; however, the role of nutritional factors is more far-reaching. This is shown in periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis: the form of nutrition can strengthen or weaken the inflammation of the periodontium. Periodontitis in turn increases the risk particularly of cardiovascular diseases and intestinal dysbiosis and strengthens the long-term sequelae of nutritional deficiency. The linking factor between nutrition and diseases of the periodontium is chronic systemic inflammation.
