Abstract

Synthetic time series of hourly precipitation can be used as input for rainfall runoff models to obtain design flows through derived flood frequency analysis. Two methods of generating synthetic precipitation are discussed. First, the stochastic synthesis of continuous long term precipitation series using a two step space-time precipitation model is shown. Second, the disaggregation of observed daily rainfall data using a multiplicative random cascade model is presented. These synthetic time series are forming the input data for rainfall-runoff simulations. For hydrological modelling the conceptual semi-distributed model HEC-HMS is used. Both types of synthetic rainfall data are well suited for derived flood frequency analysis. However regarding the disaggregated daily rainfall the omitted spatial persistence leads to an underestimation of extreme floods.
