Abstract
Most German hedges date from prehistoric times and increased steadily during the Middle Ages. The maintenance of living hedges, as opposed to fences and walls, continues in NW Germany. One commonly finds mound hedges with close-set pollarded trees and many deformed hedgerow trees as living relics of an extensive cultivation. Destruction of hedges is now widespread. -from English summary
