Abstract

Statistics courses and psychological methods are challenging for many psychology students. In winter term 16/17 an optional preparatory course in mathematics was evaluated based on a longitudinal survey - one survey before and after the course and one at the end of the term. Students with low competences in mathematics were reached appropriately, 35 out of 40 participated. Many students which seemed not need to refresh content took the course (44 out of 74). They state in a higher extend to have gained confidence while those who seemed to require the course recommend it more often and evaluate it more positively. Self-evaluations of competences increase for low competent participants. Regression analyses reveal significant interaction effects for participation and competences. Distributions of exam grades in statistics for the groups are compared. Methods and results are discussed, and conclusions are drawn regarding support services for improving transition from school to university.
