Abstract

Electrical stress and parasitic currents in machine elements of drive trains with voltage source inverters were investigated in a study. Electrical stress due to inverter induced parasitic currents was traced back to two root effects according to MuÄtze. These effects were high frequency ground currents due to the fast switching of the inverter and the common-mode voltage with the latter being responsible for EDM-currents. To measure the currents and voltages in the drive train, a special test-rig was designed and built. The system was designed as an electrical back-to-back test-rig to with a frequency-controlled motor and generator on the slow and fast side of a single-staged gearbox. In an unprepared system, it is not possible to determine the current paths exactly due to the large contact areas of the different machine elements. The problem was solved by insulating the elements from each other and then setting up defined bridges for the insulation. Through these bridges, the whole current of a component has to flow and thus it is an easy spot for measurements.
