Abstract

Biological control efforts are often based on the combined use of different natural enemies. Nevertheless the compatibility of specific antagonists as well as the overall efficiency has rarely been quantified. Therefore we tested two antagonist combinations against the green peach aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) on sweet pepper plants in plot trials during the summer months of 2000 and 2001. As antagonists we combined the parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck with either one of the predator species Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) or Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani). In 2000 we carried out two experiments to test the simultaneous release of the above mentioned antagonist combinations. The results show that in both experiments the lowest efficiency could be observed in treatments with the predator alone. In contrast compared to the control the parasitoid alone and the combination of parasitoid and predator reduced the population density of the aphid significantly. Compared to the release of the parasitoid alone the aphid mortality was increased slightly by the combined release of parasitoid and predator. In both experiments the predator had a negative impact on the formation of parasitoid mummies and therefore the potential population development of the parasitoid. In 2001 additional plot trials were carried out to optimise the biological control of the aphids by asynchronous release of the antagonists. Releasing the parasitoid A. colemani a few days before the predator A. aphidimyza was the most efficient treatment against the aphid M. persicae. The results will be tested in 2002 in the greenhouses of a commercial vegetable grower.
