Abstract
Partial discharge (PD) measurements in power transformers are a well-known tool for condition assessment of the insulation system. For this purpose, the conventional method according to textbf IEC 60270 is applied; however, the UHF PD technique, which is based on the propagation of electromagnetic waves due to a PD fault in ultrahigh frequency (UHF) range, has advantages, e.g. the possibility of online application due to improved immunity against external noises. In this contribution, the effects of the UHF probe surroundings at the installed position as well as the waveforms of the captured UHF pulses in time and frequency domain are investigated. The effect of the transformer tank on the UHF pulses is studied by measuring the scattering parameters of the probes in regards to their reflection and transmission coefficients in a transformer tank model. Moreover, two PD types, corona and surface discharges, are analyzed concerning their propagated PD pulses in time and frequency domain.
