Abstract

The photocatalytic disinfection of a recombinant Escherichia coli strain, which is resistant against the antibiotic ampicillin, has been used to test the bactericidal action of the commercial photocatalyst Evonik P25. The influence of different parameters such as the effect of the light in the ultraviolet (UV) regions (A-C), photocatalyst loading and flowrate has been studied. Approximately 90 min was required to achieve three-log inactivation of E. coli under the optimal experimental conditions (UV A/TiO 2) in comparison to a bactericidal reduction of less than one log for the system UV A light illumination and in absence of any photocatalyst.
