Abstract
The coherent superposition states for atoms superposition states for atoms interacting with external potentials were investigated, which allows a completely new class of experiments directed towards coherent trapping and guiding of neutral atoms. In addition, the process of decoherence, the collapse of superposition states, is one of the basic concepts for the understanding of the connection between classical and quantum physics. these investigations are of significant importance for trapping and guiding of individual ultracold atoms as well as coherent samples in dipole potentials. In addition, attempts to use atoms trapped in optical lattices for quantum computational purposes further stimulate the interest in the relevant decoherence properties.
