Abstract

The dynamics of subalpine forests on the north-eastern flanks of Monte Cimino (Valle di Gressoney/Northwest Italy) were determined by grazing nd tree cutting by means of selective logging of shade tree species until 1950. Owing to this, much of the autochthonous forests, originally dominated by fir and beech, were transformed into larch forests. With the abandonment of grazing, other tree species regenerated strongly, with a particular increase in the establishment of Swiss pine (Pinus cembra), widely dispersed by the Nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes). Additionally, the Swiss pine is more 'mobile' than the autochthonous spruce and fir, which depend strongly on seed trees within the stand. Morover, spruce recruitment is heavily injured by Chrysomyxa rhododendri. The extensive use of wood from shelter wood cutting will not hinder but rather promote this development. Natural disturbances such as rockslides and other exogenous interferences complement the multi-variable and chance-determined mosaic of succession in natural forests.
