Abstract
In this paper the development of a new experimental method tailored to investigate the lubricant film in sealing contacts is presented and discussed in detail. This technology is based on a new 3-Dimensional mapping technique achieved by image processing the fluorescent emission induced in the oil film of the sealing contact. The experimental observation of the fluid film in the sealing contact area using this newly developed fluorescent imaging technology allowed the discrete measurement of the 3-D field of the fluid film thickness under dynamic condition. The average height of the lubricant film under a seal lip was determined also in the submicron range. Scaled 3-D graphs of the shape of the lubricant film were produced from the digitised intensity values of the fluorescent emission. (from Authors)
