Abstract

About a quarter of all students in German higher education institutions completed vocational education and training before enrolment. Despite their numbers, this group has not yet been subject to systematic research. Our contribution focusses on different aspects of study preparation. As an addition to previous research, we subdivide the group of students with vocational training according to their pathways to higher education. For our analyses we use data from the starting cohort 5 of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Using mean comparisons and logistic regressions, we compare the subgroups of vocationally trained students to traditional students. Results indicate that groups significantly differ regarding the self-reported competences and study preparation as well as the results of standardized competence tests in maths and reading. Multivariate analyses reveal that these differences are somewhat more pronounced in universities of applied sciences than in universities. Socio-demographic characteristics of students and the study environment contribute only little to explaining these differences.
