Abstract
This paper introduces a new approach to stabilize milling processes in high speed cutting applications utilizing an electromagnetic actuator for high frequency damping forces that is fully integrated into the spindle motor. In the following, a thorough investigation of the electromagnetic design based on analytic calculations and transient FEM analysis is presented. Considering the electric properties, maximization of attractive forces, winding configuration and steel sheet material, the actuator parameters are calculated and analyzed to improve the manufacturing process. Further, the damping capacity of the actuator is shown with an analytical milling process simulation.
