Abstract

The government of Lower Saxony plans an extensive utilization of the geothermal potential in its subsurface for the supply of heat and electrical energy. Conditions to achieve this objective are quite favorable despite the moderate temperatures typical for the subsurface here; the geothermal potential below the surface of Lower Saxony is considerable, the knowledge of the geological subsurface in this oil and gas province is good, and the scientific and industrial infrastructure for exploring and developing the geologic subsurface is excellent. However, the development of deep geothermal energy is still associated with high-cost risks. They result in particular from the elaborate construction of the necessary deep wells and geological heat exchangers. One important objective of the research cooperation gebo is the investigation of new concepts and basic scientific work to improve the economics of geothermal energy recovery from the deep geological strata. By directing significant scientific efforts on questions relating to the construction of wells and downhole heat exchangers the research cooperation addresses the parts of geothermal recovery projects for which costs (approx. 70%) and risks are largest. Other main subjects include improvement concepts for the high temperature durability and the materials characteristics of high-performance drilling systems.
