Abstract

This report presents a simplified calculation method for the efficiency of continuously variable chain drives during design. Power losses are derived from radial slip movement of the chain with respect to the pulleys. For the determination of radial slip an FE model is employed which is sufficiently simple for short computation times. The implementation of the computation environment is presented. Computed and measured losses are in good agreement. Two examples are presented to show that the infuence of geometric variation on efficiency is represented correctly in the calculation method. Finally, the use of the method in optimization of the variator is presented.
